Pros and cons of using SEMrush
- Domain analysis with SEMrush is incredibly simple. You can get everything you need to see in one place, clearly laid out.

But that’s just the beginning — there are many other features that SEMrush provides that are designed to help you improve the position of your site in the search results. It’s a vital SEM (search engine marketing) tool that I think every serious blogger and internet marketer should have in their arsenal of SEO tools.
Simply put, SEMrush is a product that will help you optimize your website for SEO. The maker of SEOQuake, a popular SEO addon for Firefox, founded SEMrush in 2008. According to the company, it now features a large user base over 5 million users — and is one of the most popular SEO tools available today. SEMrush at the time of this writing has more than 130,000,000 domains and more than 800,000,000 keywords in their database. SEMrush will allow you to find all the keywords for which any current internet web page ranks. More statistical information on common keywords and similar keywords can also be found which you can rank for. Sounds a bit confusing?
All you need to do is add the top domain name, and here are the details that you’ll get:
Keyword: Keyword for that particular listed article.
Pos: The location of the keyword in the given search engine. I’ve selected the US database (default) for Google in this example, but you can change it to other locations and search engines too. Also, you can use the Free Keyword Monitor to search.
Volume: Number of exact match queries inside the local quest for that keyword. In this example, I used Google’s US database once again. (This data was taken using the Google Keyword planner tool which I also tested myself for accuracy.)
CPC: Cost per click average for the keyword.
URL: URL corresponding to which keyword is used to control the traffic.
Com: This shows the marketer’s keyword contest. A lower number means a small amount of competition, and a higher number means more competition. (How to complete a search engine marketing tool without a competition check?)
Results: Number of results on search engines. (Better, a smaller number here.)
Trend: This is one column that I find extremely interesting. We need to make sure the traffic pattern for that keyword isn’t failing to find lucrative keywords. The search pattern for that keyword over the last 12 months is pulled up by this column.
There are two columns that, in addition to all the details resulting from the search, will concern you most. Here you will find the top 200 organic keywords for that domain, and you will also receive a comprehensive backlink report for that domain along with anchor text from the link. Here the most interesting factor is the ability to find the top keywords which drive traffic to any domain. For a serious marketer or business, the holy grail is to learn the keywords of a top competitor.

We first turned to SEMrush with high hopes that it could help us to better recognize and target new keywords for which we would like to rank as well as show us keywords for which our clients’ websites were already ranked.
SEMrush has many resources to help users study keywords and topics specific to blog posts. From the latest Keyword Magic tool to the Subject Research tool to the Organic Research tool, you’re bound to find a wealth of keywords to create content in the future.
Keyword Magic Tool
Besides the traditional keyword research discussed above, using the SEMrush keyword magic tool you can also use the research keywords. This is probably my favorite research tool for keywords inside the SEMrush series. It is in fact my favorite research tool for keywords.
With its database of over two million keywords, you’re sure to find loads of keywords for your company. You can also build up to 50 target keyword lists if you are supporting several clients, or if there are several aspects to your market.
Just type in ANY keyword (although I recommend typing in a short tail keyword) and you’ll get instant results.
You’ll get metrics such as search volume, keyword difficulty, competitive density, features of SERP, cost-per-click data fast. Try the associated Keyword magic tool feature, which helps you discover keywords that you might otherwise have missed.
All those findings can now be confusing and difficult to sort through. Only add a check in the box next to the keywords that you consider useful and send them to the Keyword Analyzer tool for use in the future. The automatic grouping and seed keyword function will assist you in grouping the cluster of keywords you selected in stage 1.
Pay attention to clicking the possible column, as it lets you understand how many clicks you can anticipate after ranking for # 1 for your goal keyword. This phase saves a tremendous amount of overhead as you push forward with content development.
All in all, SEMrush’s keyword difficulty tool provides you with all the main details you need to make decisions as part of an SEO project about which keywords to aim. But there are a few changes that could be made to it.
First, the data given is only for Google searches — it would be easier if any other search metrics were available.
To be fair, the vast majority of searches tend to be performed on Google (92 percent at the time of writing, according to Statcounter) — although there are regions, not least in the United States, where other search engines enjoy greater usage (for example, 6.5 percent of searches are currently conducted on Bing in the US). Competing products like Moz and Ahrefs provide you with access to the data.
Second, it would be nice to get an indication from SEMrush as to how many backlinks you would need to rank for a certain keyword. One of the great aspects of competitive product Ahrefs about keyword research is that it tells you exactly that — it would be nice to see SEMrush follow suit.
As if it’s not enough to be able to test all of your keywords, the keywords of your rivals and the amount of traffic you’re getting in, you can also run a site audit in SEMrush to see if there are any issues with your site that could affect its efficiency.
This is another common feature of SEMrush which is idle for your own sites or you can run and produce a white label report for your customers if you are an SEO business. To boost your website’s technical SEO, a single site audit could theoretically expose a multitude of SEO improvements that you can make on the target site to significantly improve the rating.
You have the option of running a Desktop or Mobile SEO site audit separately. For your SEO team to take action on any report can be exported in pdf or excel format.
Position Tracking tool
You may want to add them to the position monitoring tool once you’ve found out the keywords you really want to target (whether you already have targeting pages or you’re planning to build some).
Here you can receive weekly updates on how you and your rivals’ rate for those keywords. Another very cool feature is it will show you all of the different SERP features that activate the keyword and who has those SERP features.
You can look at the same pages you rank for those keywords and see if they need improvement. You should watch the landing pages of your rivals and see what they do and help you come up with new ideas for your websites.
And one of the Position Tracking tool’s finest features, particularly if you’re a local business, is that you can target certain keywords to see how you’re performing at a local search stage, rather than relying on your national rankings.
With only a few more minutes of concentration on you, the SEO Ideas tool is a potent weapon in your arsenal. According to the official SEMrush team, this is one of the users’ most undervalued devices, but that doesn’t make sense to me because it’s awesome.
Every page of your website is evaluated and you receive instant SEO advice that can be disabled. By clicking on the Ideas button, you will be taken to a page as below where keyword choices, future website updates, and backlink opportunities from similar sites are suggested.
You can also see the data behind these suggestions by clicking the Get Data Behind It button if you want to get even more detail. Competitor Research is all you can do in SEMrush so don’t be fooled by being stand-alone in this segment.
Instead what you are going to get here are the tools that will have the most effect on your campaigns.
Position Tracking Mobile App
Even SEMrush has a mobile app that helps you to view your keyword status from the comfort of your mobile device. That is another feature I haven’t seen yet in any other SEO package. The Android version of the app is already available and iOS is coming out soon.
Domain Overview tool
Most SEO projects start with some basic study of a domain. That means having an easy overview of a domain’s ‘performance’ from an SEO perspective. With SEMrush, researching new keywords doesn’t need to stop. You will also learn lots of information about your own website like keywords that you are already ranked for.
You typically conduct domain analysis either on your own website — understanding where SEO improvements could be made — or on a competitor’s, seeing how difficult it will be to outstrip them in search results (or finding ways to do so).
You can even perform domain analysis on a website to see whether it’s worth linking to your owner for a link from his/her site to yours — this is because external links (or ‘backlinks’) to your content from high-quality websites can really improve your search efficiency.
Sometimes you may not even know some of the keywords that attract traffic to your web, or the traffic amount that those keywords bring you. Simply insert the root domain into the Domain Overview tool to collect information about your own domain and you get an immediate sense of how it is doing in search results.
One aspect that should be noticed before moving on is that in SEMrush ‘s domain overview of a site, where it displays your monthly traffic, those figures do not accurately reflect the total monthly traffic on your site.
Rather it gives organic and paid search traffic from keywords that SEMrush has in its 120 million keywords of their database. They use an algorithm to forecast the monthly traffic based on the number of keywords, keyword location, and those keywords’ average CTR.
To be fair to SEMrush, the tool does not indicate that the traffic statistics are 100 percent accurate, and in fact gives you an estimation of how accurate the traffic stats are likely to be (low, medium, or high) for a specific location.
It’s best to view SEMrush’s traffic stats as something that gives you an indicator of site popularity — and doing so will help you place your site against your competitors in perspective, or find places that are worth contacting regarding backlinks.
The other metrics in the domain overview given by SEMrush are extremely useful and help you gain some very valuable insights on both your own site and others.
Worth a special mention is the competitive positioning map which allows you to see, at a glance, where a specific site fits into a particular market and how powerful it is against its competitors.
Your website traffic could be much higher if you determine traffic from email campaigns in direct traffic and, social media traffic. Having said that, let us look at some of the incredible metrics SEMrush can deliver when you type in your website address in their domain search:
- An overview of the amount of traffic SEMrush knows about keywords is bringing through organic traffic to your site.
- The amount of traffic that you will carry in with the search fee.
- Number of backlinks from referring domains
- Visual representations of organic and paid keyword outlets.
- A graph showing traffic over time through organic and paid sources (can pick 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, or all the time).
- The top five organic keywords which carry traffic to your site. (more on those metrics below).
- A graph showing organic position distribution, for example, how many of your keywords rank in the top 3, how many ranks in positions 4-10, 11-20, etc., up to the top 100.
- Who are the biggest organic rivals, based on the traffic and similar keywords? Many of the mentioned competitors might not even be the ones you have heard about. More later on about the organic rivals.
- A graph illustrating a competitive place map focused on keyword numbers and organic search traffic.
- A diagram showing the top paying keywords that carry traffic to the web (can be extended to display a complete report with more metrics
- A graph illustrating paying location distribution of the keyword advertising that you are targeting.
- A map showing your main paying competitors (top 5 are shown, and you can gather more information by clicking on the list).
- A graph showing how many paying keywords you and your rivals are targeting as well as traffic carried in from keywords of PPC.
- A preview of some advertisements on your PPC.
- Some of the backlinks to your domain, what those sites are, and the anchor text and URL to which those backlinks are connected.
- The top anchor texts used in backlinks getting traffic referring to your pages.
- Refer domains that push traffic to your site sorted by those with the most backlinks that connect to your websites.
- You’re most common indexed sites, linked back by other domains.
And note, all this knowledge is a preview of the metrics. To learn more about each data collection, just click on the metrics you’re interested to view complete reports.
Organic Research tool
You will learn a great deal about the keywords, you or your rivals, currently rank for in the Organic Research method.
You get a nice graph in the Summary tab, showing the development of your keyword over time. This graph can be updated to display all top 10 page results, top 5 page results, top 2 page results, first page results, and even top 3 results.
You can get a full table of ALL the keywords you currently rate for in the top 100 results in the Positions tab.
Here we can see a complete set of keywords SEMrush has information on getting traffic to a website.
By default, SEMrush lists the keywords for those that carry the highest monthly traffic volume. Many data points can also be used to filter keywords like:
- The keyword position for organic search results is displayed with an arrow indicating the previous location.
- The difference in gains or losses from position compared to the last crawl.
- The estimated number of searches for that keyword per month.
- The Cost Per Click for keyword ads.
- The keyword with which the URL page is connected with.
- Average CPC.
- The competitive value of the keyword for anyone wishing to advertise.
- The total number of indexed URLs that contain the keyword
- Trends over time due to the rise of searches
- The first-page snapshot of the results in the search engine or SERP.
- And the last time the keyword data was changed.
Note: A keyword in this tool can take SEMrush several weeks to recrawl. If you are looking for more up-to-date information, switch the keyword to the tracking tool for location.
Checking out this feature is a great way to see precisely the keywords that carry traffic to you, and how much of the overall traffic they carry. Sometimes you may also find keywords that work very strongly for your site that you have not been aware of previously, enabling you to retarget certain keywords for greater performance.
Keyword Gap tool
The Keyword Gap tool is another cool tool included in Domain Overview. The Keyword Gap tool actually lets you see how your website stakes in your space against those that use some of the same keywords as you.
You can join up to five websites at a time, but I suggest starting with head-to-heads from your website against a top competitor is best. What you will get with the Keyword Gap tool is (by default) a list of keywords that are common to both you and your competitor(s). You will be able to see your keyword ranking versus their ranking.
You can also get details such as volume, rank-for difficulty, CPC, and competition for AdWords. Another way to use this method is to adjust the Venn diagram between the websites so you can look at your competitor’s keywords which you do not rank for at all.
To boost your rankings, use the Keyword Gap tool to identify keywords below your competitor, and make improvements to those pages. Or search for keywords you do not have, and dig for new ideas on content.
Website review tools
If you want to know how well your website and website copy functions, SEMrush has a whole suite of resources for metrics of this kind.
Rank tracking is the method of monitoring over time how the website performs for a specific keyword in search engines.
Setting this up in SEMrush is simple — you go to its location tracker section, enter a domain name and the keyword(s) you would like to monitor, and you get a report that tells you how your site is currently classified for those keywords. As time goes by, and more data flows into SEMrush about your site, you will be able to track the progress of your attempts to rank more highly for the phrases you select.
You can also enter competitor website data into SEMrush ‘s location tracker tool, which allows you to compare (again, over time) how your website performs to that of your competitors for selected keywords. And finally, you can receive daily email reminders about your progress in rank monitoring.
All in all, the functionality of rank tracking in SEMrush is good – no complaints here.
Backlinks Analytics tool
Backlinks are also one of the most important search engine indicators for helping them assess the content of the results. Although the copy itself remains the most critical metric, search engines look to see how others and websites feel about the content’s consistency.
Think about it, you should not be linking to a website for your audience to follow that carried zero interest. Why should you give them anywhere that would not further benefit them? Instead, you will be connecting to the material of a high quality that would be useful for them to learn.
In the Backlink Analytics tool, you can analyze the total backlinks to your (or a competitors’ website), which pages are linked to, where those links originate, and how your total backlinks expand over time.
Of course, how reliable the analysis of SEMrush’s backlink is, depends on the size and consistency of its link database. SEMrush claims to have 23.6 trillion backlinks in its database at the time of writing which, if correct, compares favorably with competitors Majestic, who claims 9.2 trillion, and Ahrefs, who claims 16.3 trillion.
If these figures are right, this would make the SEMrush link database larger than that of key competitors, which in principle means that the tool will provide you with more detailed backlink data.
Know that this tool can also be used to find out where your rivals get links from and use them as tools for outreach.
Backlink Audit tool
So now that you know how many backlinks you have, and which domains connect to your sites, how well can you trust those links? Will they come from credible sources? Do you have a bunch of links that lead to your website from harmful sources?
During a backlink audit, SEMrush is collecting a list of links it considers to be spammy, which you can then check and upload as a ‘disavow’ file to Google. This basically tells Google to ignore these harmful links — and since Google punishes pages with lots of poor-quality links leading to them, disavowing bad links can have a very beneficial impact on your search rankings.
Even though you may not have created the incoming link yourself, too many non-disavowed toxic backlinks make Google think you do not practice good housekeeping. Toxic backlinks will damage your own site’s credibility, so you may want to check at your backlinks and disavow highly toxic links. To browse through your toxic backlink list, use the Backlink Audit tool.
Ultimately, the backlink audit tool provided by SEMrush is a very strong product feature. It is very helpful to spot low-quality links and it really makes it easy for you to prepare a disavow file for uploading to Google. If you feel that SEMrush has been over-zealous in identifying a link as toxic, you also get the option to whitelist the links too.
Broken link building
Broken link building is a relevant — and very important — SEO tactic: it includes discovering a broken link (i.e., one that no longer leads anywhere), recreating the ‘dead’ content to which it used to point to, then asking someone who used to connect to the dead content instead to link to yours.
This approach helps you to create new backlinks to your content — and the more backlinks that lead to your website the better your content performs in search, as stated earlier.
The broken link building function of SEMrush is less easy to get at than I would like — you need to conduct a complete backlink audit on a competitor’s website, and then click a checkbox to find URL errors — but it is rather advanced since you can transfer any broken links to a list of authorized users that you can use to contact domain owners.
To support you here, the same ‘CRM-style’ features discussed above are available, which makes this job far less arduous than it could be.
Social Media Toolkit
Also, SEMrush comes with a comprehensive social media toolkit that helps you to publish and schedule your social media messages.
You will log in to your preferred social networks. As of writing this review, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube websites are usable. In all these social media networks, you can schedule your content and view your entire schedule in the SEMrush Posting Calendar.
You can use the SEMrush Social Media Poster Extension to add content while surfing the web to your social media poster, import CSV format social media posts, etc. The analytics of your social media campaigns can also be viewed right within the Analytics section.
Besides having Buffer or Hootsuite tools, SEMrush also comes with the ability to monitor the social media strategies of your competitors. You have the right to publish periodically, too. With this, you can allow SEMrush to regularly publish a particular post while driving traffic to old posts.
You can also spy on the social media activities of your rival, using their social media tracker. You can see what they wrote, and you can also get weekly email updates and create PDF files as well.
Content Marketing Toolkit:
SEO Topic Research
You just need to enter the topic you would like to write an article about. SEMrush’s research feature on the subject is very helpful. It lets you examine a topic’s subtopics, features of most backlinked posts, etc. easily.
I considered the view of the cards to be incredibly helpful when determining what material the article needs to include. If you are a content marketing agency, SEMrush ‘s subject analysis tool is very helpful in producing outlines of content at a scale.
In the example above, you can see that you can easily get some ideas about what to include in the text, just by looking at the cards.
SEO Content Template
SEO Content Template lets you plan your blog post outline to a large degree and also lets you compose your content effectively. It indicates the content of the competitors, semantic keywords, and also the keywords of the competitors that you need to use in your blog posts to rate them higher.
SEMrush also comes with a Google Docs SEO writing assistant to help you test the content for SEO friendliness in real-time.
This is related to what tools such as BrandMentions and Mentions do. Whenever your brand is listed somewhere on the Internet, it alerts you in your inbox. It also lets you know sentiment about brand reference. This feature is very helpful when you run or sell these services through a reputation management agency.
Even you can quickly find out the mentions that have not been connected to you. By approaching them you can regain the ties like-” Hey, you listed my brand, I appreciate it. But maybe you should speak to me first.’
You can track your competitors’ brand mentions as well, and it always reveals great opportunities for you. Whenever they do guest blogging, whenever they are featured and so on, you can get notified.
Simply set all the terms that you need to track and SEMrush will do all the hard lifting for you. Only wait for the emails while SEMrush searches the mentions. It is like arranging it, then forgetting it. Similar to any other SEMrush apps, you can also export the brand mentions results in PDF and various other formats.
You need to enter any URL with the Content Analyzer function, and SEMrush will show all the URL metrics including the backlinks and social shares. It also lets you discover how over a period of time, the number of backlinks and social shares for the content has risen.
You may consider adding the top 20 percent of your blog posts that drive most of the traffic to Post Tracker for your site to be updated with respect to the recent output of the post.
This functionality is part of the competitive analysis toolkit developed by SEMrush.
Any time you reach a new niche or sector, you need to give this tool a spin to set the right benchmarks in your company, identify the niche influencers, discover competitors, analyze new trends, etc.
Simply enter any URL, say Asos-a fashion company in this case. SEMrush can be seen showing the critical data such as market-relevant pages, what are the traffic sources of the domain, traffic metrics, and much more.
With that, as you move into this niche, you get a good idea of what to expect.
Interface and ease-of-use
The SEMrush interface is similar to that of rival products such as Moz and Ahrefs and contains a menu of options on the left that you use to access features on the right. The menu options are divided into useful categories, such as competitive analysis, keyword research, link building, rank monitoring, on-page SEO, and reporting.
There is plenty of data to deal with — this might feel daunting at first, but you will soon get used to it (and the purpose of tools like SEMrush is, of course, to give you a lot of data). In addition, the data visualization offered by SEMrush helps you resolve this feeling of data overload — most of the measurements given are graphed in ways that make the information much easier to comprehend.
However, it would be good if SEMrush’s interface could be made to function easier with mobile phones — as things stand, it is not responsive, meaning that if you log into SEMrush on a mobile device, you will see the traditional desktop interface, meaning very tiny text and plenty of pinching and zooming.
Why would you immediately start using the SEMrush tool?
We as bloggers work day and night to write posts aiming to increase the amount of traffic coming into our site. But sometimes we do not concentrate enough on how we get the traffic generated. If you test your stats, you will find that only a few of your blog posts contribute to your blog’s entire traffic. But you can find keywords by using the SEMrush SEO tool that drives traffic to the website of your competitor and you can write quality content based on those keywords. This will allow you to spot your niche better for some target keywords.

Pricing and value for money
SEO tools like SEMrush are costly compared to other types of ‘SaaS’ (Software as a service) software. That is understandable though because you are not only paying for features, you are paying for access to vast volumes of data, including information from competitors.
SEMrush offers 3 pricing plans:
- Pro: $99.95 per month
- Guru: $199.95 per month
- Business: $399.95 per month
There is also a free trial available — the regular edition is 7 days, but for a limited time you can access an extended 14-day trial. It is stronger than Ahrefs’ deal (a paid-for 7-day trial) but less generous than Moz’s (a 30-day free trial) in terms of how this compares to the trials offered by rivals. To make use of the trial, you have to enter your credit card information, which is irritating but typical enough practice with regard to SEO devices.
The above rates are roughly comparable to those paid by main competitors Moz, Ahrefs, and Majestic (that said, Majestic provides a lower monthly package for $49 a month, but it is substantially less usable than its competitors’ entry-level plans).
The key differences between the plans include:

Let us focus on a few elements of market dynamics to illustrate where SEMrush has good — or poor — value for money to give.
Perhaps the worst part about the pricing structure of SEMrush is that all plans — including the $399.95 business plan — provide just one user account or seat.
If you want to have access to SEMrush for more than one person in your company, you will have to pay an additional $70 to $140 per user (depending on the plan type).
And just as annoyingly, the number of seats per account is limited—only the ‘Business’ account allows you to add more than 2 users (the total user limit for this plan is 9).
This compares negatively with all of its main competitors, who generally increase the seat count as you move up the pricing ladder (especially Moz — you get 2 seats included even on its entry-level plan, and you get 10 on its mid-tier plan).
If this is a problem for your company, you may need to explore with SEMrush an ‘Enterprise’ plan—this helps you to negotiate prices for a custom solution.
